"While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease." — Genesis 8:22 (NKJV)
There is a profound peace found in the garden. It is a place where we can physically touch God’s creation and witness the undeniable laws of nature He set in motion. But recently, as I’ve spent more time tending to the soil, I’ve realized that the garden isn’t just a place to grow food—it is a living classroom for our spiritual lives.
For a long time, I had no idea about the bounty that was possible in a garden. Similarly, I had no idea about the immense bounty hidden within the pages of the Bible. Just as the soil holds potential for physical harvest, the Word of God holds the potential for a life of abundance, peace, and provision.
The Principle of Instruction and Care
We often think that nature just "happens." And it’s true—weeds will grow without any effort at all. But a harvest? A harvest requires intention.
I’ve learned that while things can grow wildly on their own, they can also die without proper care. Anything we value—whether it is a tomato plant or our very lives—must be given attention. The garden has taught me that we cannot simply hope for the best; we must follow the instructions of the Creator.
Just as I pull out a gardening guide to understand what soil a pepper plant needs, we have the ultimate manual for our lives.
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." — 2 Timothy 3:16-17
The Bible gives us every instruction we need to handle every "pest," problem, or desire we face. When we encounter anxiety (a pest of the mind) or lack (a drought of resources), we don't have to guess the solution. We simply turn to the Manual.
The Miracle of the Sprout
There is a specific cycle in gardening that mirrors our walk with God perfectly:
Hearing: We learn about the seed.
Doing: We plant and water it (Instruction).
Seeing: The sprout appears (Faith confirmed).
When you first plant a seed, you are acting on faith. You bury it in the darkness of the soil, trusting that it will do what it was designed to do. In our spiritual lives, this is when we hear a word of instruction from God and choose to obey it, even when we don't see immediate results.
But then, it happens. That tiny green sprout pops through the surface.
"And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." — Galatians 6:9
The moment I see that sprout in the garden, my faith explodes. I think, It worked! If this grew, what else can I grow?
The same applies to our walk with the Lord. When we apply a Biblical principle—perhaps regarding forgiveness, or tithing, or patience—and we see the fruit of peace or provision sprout in our lives, we become hooked. The growth produces even greater faith. Once you see the results of God’s Word working in your life, there is no going back. You become a believer in the deepest sense.
Jehovah-Jireh: The God of Surprise Blessings
One of the most delightful parts of gardening is the surprise. You might plant seeds expecting a modest return, only to find that a single vine has produced more than you could ever eat.
This is the nature of Jehovah-Jireh, our Provider.
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning." — James 1:17
God is faithful. His nature is unchanging, just like the seasons. When we are faithful learned gardeners of our own hearts, seeking His instruction daily, we reap a consistent harvest. But God, in His goodness, often goes beyond consistency. He delights in blessing us by surprise.
Just as we find unexpected strawberries or a bloom we didn't think would survive, God transforms us in ways we didn't anticipate. We seek Him for peace, and He gives us joy unspeakable. We seek Him for guidance, and He gives us a destiny.
Cultivating a Life of Faith
If you are looking at the "garden" of your life today and wondering why it isn't producing, ask yourself: Am I consulting the Manual?
We must be as diligent with our spirits as we are with our prize vegetables. First, we hear the Word. Then, we follow the instruction. Finally, we watch with patience.
God is faithful to perform His Word. As you walk in Spirit and in Truth, digging into the bounty of the Bible, you will find that you never go hungry. Your life will become a well-watered garden, producing fruit in its season, testifying to the goodness of the Creator.
"And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail." — Isaiah 58:11
