The Tithe: Returning the First Seed

Part 4 of the Series: The Garden of Prosperity — Understanding God’s Law of Seedtime and Harvest

If you plant a garden, the first seeds you place in the soil determine everything that follows.

The first seeds establish the direction of the harvest.

In the same way, God established a principle that governs prosperity in the Kingdom: the first portion belongs to Him.

This principle is called the tithe.

What the Tithe Means

The word tithe simply means a tenth.

From the earliest pages of Scripture, God taught His people to return the first tenth of what they received back to Him.

This was never meant to be a burden. It was meant to be an act of trust.

Scripture says:

Leviticus 27:30

“A tithe of everything from the land… belongs to the Lord.”

Notice the wording carefully.

The tithe does not belong to us first. It already belongs to God.

Tithing is simply returning to God what He has set apart for Himself.

The Tithe Establishes Trust

Tithing is not about paying God.

God does not need our money.

Tithing is about establishing trust in God as our provider.

When someone tithes, they are making a powerful declaration:

“God is my source, not my paycheck.”

That act of trust changes the heart.

It reminds us that everything we have ultimately comes from God.

The Tithe Opens the Windows of Heaven

God attached a promise to the practice of tithing.

Malachi 3:10

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… and see if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out blessing.”

This is one of the few places in Scripture where God actually invites His people to test His faithfulness.

When the tithe is returned, God promises to release blessing.

This does not mean money magically appears overnight. Instead, it means God begins to work in ways that bring provision, opportunity, and protection.

The First Seed Sets the Tone

In a garden, the first seeds determine what kind of harvest will grow.

In the same way, the tithe establishes the direction of our financial lives.

When the first portion goes to God, everything else that follows is placed under His blessing.

This is why many believers say:

“It is better to live on ninety percent blessed by God than one hundred percent without His blessing.”

Tithing Is About Honor

At its core, tithing is not really about money.

It is about honor.

Scripture teaches this clearly:

Proverbs 3:9-10

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled.”

The tithe is a way of saying:

“God, you come first.”

And when God comes first, the rest of life begins to fall into place.

A Foundation for Prosperity

The tithe is not the entire garden, but it is the foundation of the garden.

It is the first seed that establishes our relationship with God as our provider.

Once that foundation is in place, generosity and giving begin to grow naturally.

And those seeds produce harvest.

Looking Ahead

Many people understand the idea of tithing, but they still struggle with an important question:

How does giving beyond the tithe work?

In the next part of this series, we will explore the difference between tithing and offerings—and how generosity multiplies the harvest in the Kingdom of God.

Love Always,

A Grateful Gardener
